Have any of you ever lost something? I don’t mean misplaced around the house. I mean you were out someplace and you lost something. Something important.
I remember one day when I was in college, I lost my keys. I’m walking from class to the student union building to get myself a beer. We had a bar on campus. Beer and wine coolers only. Anyway, being a biker, I wore my keys on my belt loop. That meant I did a lot of jingling when I walked.
Anyway, as I said, I was walking from class to the student union building and all of a sudden I realized that I wasn’t jingling. I went and felt for my keys but they were gone. Okay, I’m worried. I figured I would retrace all my steps. I wanted to be thorough and start from square one so I went back to my motorcycle. No keys. So I went every place I could remember being at that day. I went to the classrooms where I had my classes. Both were unlocked so I could go in and look around. Nothing. Okay, I kept tracing. I thought, what if one of my instructors saw some keys on the floor and picked them up. I said to myself, finish tracing your steps and if you don’t find them go see your instructors in their offices. They may leave my keys with the secretary in case someone comes looking when they aren’t there.
Now I’ve retraced everywhere and now I’m heading towards the student union building again. I wasn’t more than five feet from where I started and I saw the damn things lying on the ground. Can you believe it?! I spent an hour retracing my steps and walking all over that damned campus and all I had to do was take a few steps to the rear and I would have found them! I was just so grateful that I was the only one who knew what had happened because I felt like a real horse’s rear. I felt like a government worker. If there’s a hard way and an easy way to do something they always take the hard way. Well, we all make asses of ourselves sometimes. D’oh!
